Boseko Lokombo, the #8 ranked MLB committed to the Ducks Christmas Eve. Lokombo chose the Ducks over Boise State, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Cal, and UCLA. Lokomboo played his junior year of high school in Eugene. Lokombo also plays receiver and with his size could fill a need at receiver for the Ducks.

The awards continue to pile up for Duck's defensive end Nick Reed, as he and center Alex Mack of California have been named winners of the 29th annual Morris Trophy.

The Morris Trophy is a unique award given to the outstanding offensive and defensive linemen in the Pacific-10 Conference. What makes the award unique is the selection procedure, which has the starting offensive linemen in the Conference voting for the defensive winner and vice versa. It is truly a players’ award.

Four Ducks Chosen All Conference First Team

USC leads the conference with eight players named First Team All Conference, while the Ducks and Beavers have the second most number of players named First Team.

Ducks Hold Off Kansas State 75-70

The Ducks (4-4) were able to hold off KSU (5-3) to win a hard fought game at Mac Court without their big men Michael Dunnigan and Joevan Catron who were out with injuries. It was the Ducks first home game since November 17th and first win after dropping their last three. The KSU Wildcats have lost three in a row. Tajuan Porer lead the team with 28 points and Freshman Garrett Sim had 16 points to follow his 28 point effort at Utah last week. This game rounds out probably the most difficult stretch of their season with the Ducks able to go 2-3 against Alabama, North Carolina, Texas, Utah and Kansas State. The Ducks next take on San Diego this Saturday just up the road for the annual Pape Jam in Portland at the rose Garden before a rematch with Ernie Kents old team, St.Mary's at Mac Court.

Los Angeles Harbor College wide receiver Chris Matthews is on the Ducks radar. Matthews is planning a visit to Eugene in January and is excited about the prospect of potentially playing for the Ducks. Matthews is 6-5, 210 pounds and runs a 4.5 40. Through nine games this year he has 80 receptions for 1,235 yards and 11 touchdowns. Matthews went to the same high school and is friends with Jeremiah Johnson. Kentucky, Memphis, Akron, New Mexico, Marshall, and Utah are also looking at Matthews.

Jeremiah Johnson Named Pac-10 Player of the Week and Other Duck News!

Jeremiah Johnson was named this weeks Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week after his 219 rushing yards on 17 carries, including runs of 79 yards and 83 yards that went for a touchdown against the Beavers in the Civil War. Congratulations to JJ to finish off his regular season college career in such style. Nick Reed became the all time Oregon sack leader with 29.5 after his 3 sacks against the Beavers and LeGarrette Blount became the all time single season rushing touchdown leader for the Ducks with 16.

Chip Kelly was name Rivals.com Coordinator of the Week after the Ducks set records for most total yards ever for the Ducks and most yards and points ever given up by the Beavers. The Ducks ran for 385 yards and passed for 309 yards for a total of 694 yards. More good news for the Ducks, according to Mike Bellotti, Chip Kelly does not have an interview with Syracuse as reported by Rivals.com.

The Duck playing to the Beaver fans after the Ducks blasted the Beavers 65-38

A great offensive showing and a couple of interceptions returned for TD's by the defense gave the Ducks an impressive Civil War victory that almost assured the Beavers will not be playing in the Rose Bowl, which would have been their first in 41 years. They may have to wait another 40 plus years. The Ducks had a record day with 694 yards of total offense (their most ever) and putting up 65 points (which is the most ever given up by the Beavers). The defense gave up a ton of passing yards again, but did force a couple of field goal attempts in the redzone, one of which the Beavers missed. The defense also forced 4 turnovers, including 2 interceptions that were returned for touchdowns of 40 and 70 yards. The defense will need to do better in the bowl game against a Texas Tech or Oklahoma State team. Overall, I don't think anybody expected the Ducks to put up 65 points and 694 yards of offense, including 309 passing yards. The defense gave up 463 yards, 374 through the air and 38 points which I think most people expected. Now on to the Holiday Bowl to matchup with another high powered offensive Big 12 team.

The Syracuse football team is looking to replace Greg Robinson, who was fired not long ago, and Chip Kelly is a potential replacement. Kelly will interview for the head coaching position on Wednesday. Hopefully this news doesn't distract the team for the Civil War game and the Bowl Game and hopefully Kelly doesn't like what he sees and stays with the Ducks. I would like to see the Ducks name him as Bellotti's successor to keep him around. He would be a huge loss for the Ducks.

The Ducks (3-3) lost to the #1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (5-0) 98-69 and then lost to the #6 ranked Texas Longhorns (4-1) 70-57 to finish in fourth place out of eight teams at the EA Sports Maui Invitational. The Ducks blowout loses to two of the more "elite" teams shows how far the Ducks have to go to be a contender. This is a very young but talented team which should compete in a year or two. The Ducks next face the Utah Utes (3-1) on Dec. 3rd.

JUCO DT Andrew Iupati has committed to play football for the Ducks!

The Oregon Ducks have been in hot pursuit of a number of talented junior college players in recent weeks and their diligence appears to have paid off. Oregon landed one of the top JUCO defensive tackle prospects from Southern California last week and he will visit in early December. Huntington Beach (Calif.) Golden West College defensive tackle Andrew Iupati was a force for the Rustlers inside as a freshman in 2007 and earned a number of scholarship offers based on his play as a freshman. With offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Tennessee, Arizona State, Arizona, Kansas and Nevada, Iupati decided to call Eugene his home for the next two years. "I verbally committed to the Oregon Ducks last week," Iupati said. "I am going there on a visit on December 5th." Iupati is 6-foot-1, 295 pounds and quick for his size with a 40-yard dash time around 4.9 seconds. He finished with 36 tackles, 2.5 sacks and nine tackles-for-loss in 2007 and with it garnered second team all-Mission Conference honors. He played in six games in 2008 before suffering a stretched MCL and had 19 tackles, 2.5sacks, three tackles-for-loss and two forced fumbles. "I got hurt at about mid-season with a stretched MCL," Iupati said. "It is all good now." Iupati graduated from Western High School (Calif.) in 2007 and is on track to transfer in May '09 with three years left to play two years of football for the Ducks. He says it was a tough decision, but one that is better for him. "I feel good," Iupati said. "I am going to miss my family and my girlfriend. It was the best opportunity for me to play and show my stuff. It was closer to the house and my family." Iupati is the No. 53 rated junior college player in the country and the No. 7 defensive tackle, according to Rivals.com.

Bryce McNeal says he loved his visit to Eugene and the staff, fans, and experience made an impression on him.

After recently taking an official visit to the University of Oregon for the game against Stanford, running back Bryce Brown says the Ducks have an “edge” over the University of Miami. Bryce Brown is the #1 rated running back recruit. There is also rumor that his brother 5-Star and #1 ranked LB from last year Arthur Brown and backup QB Jacory Harris who both currently play for Miami are taking a look at possibly transfering to Oregon. I don't know how realistic this is, but it is kind of exciting.

Defensive back Terrance Brown took his first visit this past weekend for the Ducks game against Arizona. "It was very cool in Oregon," Brown said. "The facilities there are insane but the part that really stood out for me was the fans and the game atmosphere. "That was the loudest stadium I've ever been in and the fans are just crazy there. The players treated me great, like a brother and it was real and sincere. I already knew some of the players there like Marvin Johnson and Jeremiah Johnson and I knew a few of the recruits as well like Keith Price and Vachel Samuels." Brown will visit Stanford (Jan. 9) and said the Ducks and Cardinal are leading at this time. "I'm still working on my application for Stanford but I'm getting closer," Brown said. "I also want to visit San Diego State and Boise State before I commit anywhere."

Former 5 Star Safety Jamar Hornsby is receiving a lot of attention from the Ducks!

"The former 5-Star recruit signed with the Gators, took a redshirt, and was in the rotation at safety his redshirt freshman season. An off the field issue led Jamar to N' East CC and this season Hornsby let the rest of the country know that he is still around." Is the former Sandalwood (FL) product looking to get back in the SEC? "It would be nice, but I have two years left, and I want to get back on the field and make some plays. Oregon has started recruiting me too. I just want a chance to make an impact."

Word is there is a great chance Boseko Lokombo will most likely commit to the Ducks soon. Michael Philipp really enjoyed his trip and the Ducks are very much in the running. Masoli was recognized as the Pac-10 Conference Player of the Week. In the Ducks win over Arizona on Saturday, Masoli was 21-26 passing for 298 yards and 2 TD's and no INT's and had 10 rushes for 89 yards and 3 TD's for a total of 387 yards and 5 TD's. Masoli was honored by the Pac-10 for his second offensive Player of the Week award, both against Arizona schools.

The Oregon Ducks and Nike are working to develop a new set of Duck football uniforms for the 2010 season, Nike officials said this evening.

The Ducks debuted a new set of black, stretch cordura uniforms tonight against Arizona. Nike vice president for design and special projects Tinker Hatfield said the wings on the jerseys developed from a functional problem of durability in the shoulder pads, with a new pattern in the shape of the wings addressing that.

Players such as Darron Thomas, Eddie Pleasant and Jeremiah Masoli are helping design the new look for 2010. Hatfield said the ability to held design new uniforms with Nike is a selling point used in Oregon’s recruiting efforts.

The Ducks are on track for a complete uniform redesign for the 2010 season, Nike officials said during the Ducks’ 55-45 win over Arizona. The new duds, which appeared for sale earlier in the week locally against the wishes of Nike, were solid black with silver numbers outlined in yellow and silver wings on the shoulder pads. The wings were composed of a “film” designed to improve the durability of the shoulders, which have become vulnerable to wear as Nike has attempted to make jerseys thinner and lighter. “We’ve saved some weight and reached our performance goals, and created something that’s interesting and unique,” Nike vice president for design and special projects Tinker Hatfield said at halftime. “And the players dig that, big time.” Oregon senior receiver Jaison Williams called the new uniforms “some of the best I’ve seen since I’ve been here.” Players have been involved in past redesigns, but those interviewed Saturday said Nike designed the newest version and presented it to the Ducks for approval. “I’m definitely a fan of the way they did the outline of the numbers, and the wings,” Williams said. The uniforms were made available for sale at a local store this week. That wasn’t the plan, said Todd Van Horne, Nike’s creative director in the apparel division. “They should have not been for sale until kickoff,” Van Horne said. “It’s hard to keep a good secret,” Hatfield said Nike has targeted the 2010 season for the next complete redesign of Oregon’s uniforms. He said the company aims to tell every class of incoming UO recruits it will have a hand in designing a new look at some point during their careers. A group of players including true freshman quarterback Darron Thomas and redshirt freshman linebacker Eddie Pleasant are involved in planning for the set that should debut in 2010. “We’re going to try to top what we’re doing right now,” Thomas said. “But it’s going to be hard.”

This weekends game with the new black helmets, new black uniforms and fans wearing black would normally be a "BlackOut" but Nike is calling it "LightsOut". One Duck fan said he spoke with the Duck Shop and according to them they sent a memo out to all of the stores that the Ducks are going to be wearing their new black uniforms along with the new black helmets and that there would be a limited number of the new jerseys for sale begining Saturday at the Autzen store. A Nike rep also confirmed the Ducks will be wearing the new jerseys.

The new Ducks helmet was displayed on today's episode of College Football Live. Reece Davis said that although it was "politically correct to hate on Oregon's uniforms", he said "I really like these" and Robert Smith said "I love them, they're really cool" and Bruce Feldman made a comment "hey, they're different and people talk about them". They also talked about LeGarette Blount and how his decision to play for Oregon was influenced by the uniforms. Check out the video here!

Vote for the Ducks for the Pontiac Pac-10 Game Changing Performance

During the Pac-10 Football season, Oregon was named as three of the eight Pontiac Pac-10 Game Changing Performances on FOX Sports Net. During the Oregon vs. Washington game on August 30th, the Oregon vs. UCLA game on October 11th, and the Oregon vs. Stanford game on November 11th, Oregon received the game's Pontiac Pac-10 Game Changing Performance and was awarded $1,000 each time to their general scholarship fund, courtesy of Pontiac.

Now it's time for all eight (8) Pontiac Pac-10 Game Changing Performances to compete for the Grand Prize --- to be named Pontiac Pac-10 Game Changing Performance of the Year and be awarded $10,000 to their general scholarship fund, compliments of Pontiac.

November 12th through December 6th, fans will be encouraged to go to www.pac-10.org /pontiac to view all eight (8) performances and to vote for the Pontiac Pac-10 Game Changing Performance of the Year. The Ducks have added two more visitors for this weekends big game against Arizona, for a total of seven. The Ducks also have an official visit scheduled for December 5th with 4 star and number 11 ranked linebacker Michael Clay. Like this time last year the Ducks are starting to get a lot of interest from highly rated recruits. Let's hope the Ducks are able to lock some of these guys up, like they did late in the season last year with Darron Thomas and Chris Harper.

Obviously, they’re not as glossy as the other UO helmets. And they’re most certainly not black. They’re just about equal parts flecks of black and green paint. Jaison Williams compared them to the turf in Autzen, which has green fibers and then a base of ground-up, powdery black rubber. I thought that was apt. “They’re nice,” Williams said. “It’s not what we’re used to. It doesn’t have the same luster. But it’s nice. Definitely it’s a well-thought-out paint job." As to the speculation about black jerseys, Williams said he didn’t know of any “other than the ones we’ve been wearing thus far, nah. There’s speculation and replicas online, message boards and whatnot. For the first time, today I took a look at it. I don’t know if that’s the same thing we’re wearing. I doubt it is, because I don’t think they would release it to the public before they release it to us.” Other Ducks clearly think the new jerseys are coming. Jeremiah Masoli’s reaction to the helmets: “They look cool. We’ll see how they look with the jerseys.” Jeremiah Johnson also said he was anticipating a new jersey, saying he was “ready to put those on and see how the crowd’s going to react.” And he’s not bothered that a new black jersey might make the Ducks look a little bit more like Beavers. “I think I speak for the whole town of Eugene when I say, black goes better with green and yellow,” Johnson said. “That’s my whole take on it. Black and orange don’t even look right to me. If that’s their color, we take it and make it look better.”

Recruiting Update: Bryce McNeal

Four Star Wide Receiver Bryce McNeal is among a talented group of recruits visiting this weekend for the game against Arizona. McNeal has offers from close to 35 schools. "I talked to Coach Pflugrad two hours ago," McNeal said "He told me I would start out on the outside and as time went on I would move in or go to other positions. I went over the depth chart and I would redshirt, but I would rather play right away." Interesting, the Ducks have a number of receivers that can't catch the ball and a talented receiver like McNeal would redshirt. I am sure that because he wants to play right away, at least one of the 34 other schools would play him right away. I think Pflugrad might be a coach that needs to be replaced almost as much as Alliotti, the Oregon receivers haven't developed very well, I think the Duck receivers drop more balls than any in the country. Possibly a reason why Diante Jackson might change his mind about Oregon. If the Ducks coaches want Masoli and the passing game to get better the receivers need to provide some help and learn to catch the ball.

Here is an article from an Arizona newspaper about the reputation of Autzen Stadium and how loud it is. I hope Saturday's game rivals last years game against ASU in terms of decibels, I know it is not a match-up between two top 5 teams and Gameday is not going to be there, but a blackout with new black helmets, a number of recruits to impress and the fact that Arizona has beat Oregon the last two years and a possible Holiday Bowl bid on the line are plenty of reason to be louder than ever.

Physical and Intense Practice this Week for The Ducks

Jarius Byrd was involved in a scuffle that got him kicked out of practice and will earn him possible disciplinary action. Jerome Boyd threw LeGarrette Blount to the turf at the end of a play. The Ducks are going to need to play physical against Arizona which is a very tough physical team that likes to talk trash. Hopefully the Ducks are able to get fired up without any serious injuries.

It sounds like black helmets for sure this weekend. Apparently the black helmets were shown to the team last night after practice and they are going to be tested during today's practice. Jeremiah Johnson says they are black with a yellow O, probably what most people envisioned (see above). As far as the new jerseys, it doesn't sound like they are going to be worn this weekend, so we will have to wait until next year, unless they introduce them for the bowl game. I like the look, I already ordered a hat, and so far the polls indicate most everyone else does as well.

Could this be the weekend that the long rumored new uniforms/helmets are introduced? Could Oregon Duck fans turn Autzen Stadium from a sea of Lightning Yellow to a sea of Black? Nike has introduced new Blackout Gear, so it is entirely possible that the new uniform rumor will be put to rest this weekend. I like the Blackout hat, I think I am going to get me one! I started another poll, this one on your thoughts about the new look. I love the fact that the Ducks program is on the cutting edge of design and use this to their advantage with publicity and recruiting, but all I care about is the Ducks beating Arizona and Oregon State to finish the season strong and go to a good bowl game. Brett Favre's nephew Dylan Favre set the TD passing record for the state of Mississippi with his 43rd touchdown pass. Junior Dylan Favre has an arm just like his uncle but also has the ability to scramble. Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Southern Miss and UCLA are looking at Favre. Will Oregon look at Favre? He might be a good fit in the Ducks spread offense.

Diante Jackson made a trip to Boulder, CO this weekend and it sounds as though he may change is mind and decide to go with the Buffaloes instead of the Ducks. Davis started his first game against Stanford over Jaison Williams and had a nice 40+ yard catch and run which almost went for a TD, Davis also had a dropped pass in the endzone before the half. Kerry Lewis, three star and number twenty four ranked safety out of Lancaster, Texas chose the Minnesota Gophers over The Ducks, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt, and Tulsa.

Travis Hawkins, and Under Armour All-American and four star and number twelve ranked cornerback out of Gaithersburg, Maryland chose to stay in his home state and committed to the Maryland Terrapins over The Ducks, Penn State, Michigan and Central Florida.

Class of 2010 ESPNU 150 running back Mack Brown out of Georgia has already received offers from the Ducks, Arkansas, Duke and Louisville. Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma and North Carolina are also recruiting the touted junior. Brown seems interested in the SEC or ACC, so the Ducks probably don't have much of a shot. The Ducks are already deep at running back so if they were unable to get him that would be OK.

Blount's Game Winning Touchdown Run with Six Seconds Remaining

The weather was windy and rainy. At times there was only a light drizzle and during the first half the sky was clear and the sun was out, but for most of the second half the skies were dark and filled with heavy rain. Such conditions you would think would suit the Ducks, but Stanford seemed to be able to handle the ball better than the Ducks. Oregon turned over the ball 4 times which lead to 10 points for Stanford while the Cardinal turned the ball over only once during the initial kickoff which led to an Oregon field goal. The Ducks were able to move the ball well but three times turned the ball over which killed good drives that probably would have led to points. Also a bad snap over Masoli's head gave Stanford a safety and the ball with a little over eight minutes left in the game and Oregon leading 27-22. The Ducks were again able to run the ball and Masoli was even able to put together a decent showing passing the ball, even though he underthrew and overthrew a few passes. The Defense gave up a lot of rushing yards but did better than normal with their pass defense. Overall, the Ducks were the better team that tried to give this one away. The Ducks will not win against Arizona or Oregon State if they continue the sloppy play. Seven turnovers, two safeties, muffed punts, bad snaps, mental mistakes, lack of fundamentals, an unusually large number of bonehead plays over the last two games. The Ducks need to focus on fundamentals during this weeks practice, mistakes will cost Oregon against Arizona like they did against Cal. I think it would be a good idea for the Ducks to practice outside in the elements to get a feel for possible game time conditions. I also think the Ducks should start Masoli against Arizona but at the first sign of struggle and inability to move the ball I would like to see Darron Thomas. I win is a win, but the coaches need to do their job this week and get some things together. Overall, I give the Ducks a C for this game because of the number of turnovers and a few big plays given up on defense, otherwise they did well. Nick Alliotti still needs to go and Mike Bellotti still needs to do a better job with some of his decisions.

Autzen Stadium Losing it's Mystique?

Here is an interesting opinion/article about whether or not Autzen stadium is still as loud and intimidating as it has been in years past. Are Duck fans losing their voices? Or are fans just not as excited this year because of the realization it is a so-called rebuilding year. The Washington game was certainly loud, mainly because it was the first game of the season and it was against the hated Huskies. The Utah State game was loud but not too loud primarily because of the opponent. The Boise State game was loud to begin and of course became quiet as Duck fans were stunned by the beatdown until the fourth quarter near comeback. The UCLA game, the crowd seemed quiet and subdued, maybe because it was so cold, maybe because it was a late game, who knows. Hopefully the Duck fans get into the Stanford game from the get go and don't let up until the end. The Ducks have a lot of top recruits to impress this weekend, Duck fans won't disapoint and will live up to their reputation and give reason for the recruits to come to Eugene.

Barring an appeal, construction could begin in less than a week. Ducks Unveil New Baseball Uniforms

Now begins the transition into basketball and baseball postings for this blog. Yesterday at a press conference at Autzen Stadium the Ducks unveiled their new uniforms for the 2009 season. Just like the football, basketball, cheerleading, etc. teams, the baseball team will have six different uniforms. A pretty cool addition to the uniform is that the pinstripes are actually made with the Duck Fight Song. The Ducks are expected to make an immediate impact with a legendary coach, the buzz and excitment of bringing the program back, a new multi-million dollar high tech stadium, and the second ranked recruiting class, and of course the best uniforms in college.

There has been speculation that Washington may try to speak to Chip Kelly about the soon to be vacant head coaching position. Oregon's AD Pat Kilkenny has said that Washington has not contacted the Ducks about speaking with Kelly. My personal feelings on the matter is I think Mike Bellotti should move on, probably to the AD position and the Ducks should offer the head coaching position to Kelly if Washington or another team tries to get him. The Ducks success and opportunity to compete for a future Rose Bowl or National Championship rely on Kelly's offensive genius and recruiting ability.

5 Star JUCO DT Myles Wade Decommits from The Ducks

Myles Wade a Portland, OR native and Five star rated JUCO DT who orginally signed to play with the Ducks for the 2007 season has decided not to play for the Ducks. He is rated as the #2 JUCO DT and #5 JUCO player overall. He cited "irreconcilable differences" as his decision to leave the Ducks. Oregon State is his leading team right now. This is a big blow to the Ducks to lose such a great recruit and to make things worse he will probably go to the Beavers. Justin Thompson another five star DT also left the Ducks and looks to be headed to Corvallis. Two five star DT's (a position the Ducks are in need) headed to Beaverland, how depressing. The loss of these players hurts the Ducks, but both players had academic issues, so I guess the academic standards at Oregon are higher then they are at Oregon State.... go figure.

Bryce Brown, a five star running back and ranked as the number one running back and number ten recruit overall according to most lists is going to be in Eugene this Saturday for the Ducks game against Stanford. Brown has a soft verbal to Miami, FL where his brother plays and took a visit to Missouri a few weeks ago. The important thing for the Ducks is to get the recruits to Eugene so experience Autzen Stadium and the other facilities and the game day crowd and get them excited to play ball in Eugene. This would be a huge boost to Oregon's recruiting class.

NOTES:

In each of Oregon's three losses against the only winning teams Oregon has faced, the Ducks were unable to run the ball efficiently. Though Oregon had over 200 yards running against Cal, a lot of those yards were in chunks and Oregon stalled and was unable to score on a number of drives. Oregon also had its worst passing effore against Cal throwing for less than 100 yards between 2 QB's. Also, in Oregon's three losses they were unable to put together a reliable passing game. Against Boise State Oregon did have a good pass offense in the 4th quarter with Darron Thomas, but had less than 50 yards the first 3 quarters. Oregon's next three opponents all have winning records. I believe the Ducks will beat Stanford and get their first and only win against a team with a winning record, but lose to Arizona and Oregon State, both for the third straight year. Oregon will finish 7-5 and probably go to the Las Vegas Bowl against TCU and get stomped. I would like to see some of the young future stars get some more playing time to develop. In two years I believe the Ducks will make a National Championship run.

Ducks vs Cal: Grades and Analysis

The Ducks wore their good looking all white "stormtrooper" uniform combo for their game against Cal, yet looked terrible in the downpour of rain. The Ducks were unable to capitalize on five Cal turnovers and made costly errors themselves that lead to 16 Cal points. The Ducks of course were again one dimensional and were unable to pass the ball efficiently, the Ducks were able to run the ball pretty well but stalled out on a number of drives. Mistakes were the key to the loss for the Ducks (a botched snap on a punt that went 38 yards out of the back of the endzone for a safety, a blocked extra point attempt, a fumble and an interception within the Ducks own 10 yard line that lead to two Cal TD's, and a missed short field goal, that should have been a TD scoring drive that stalled). The Ducks defense was about what I expected, they forced turnovers and Cal to punt the ball, and only gave up a few big pass plays. They were not able to put much pressure on the Cal QB's and gave up more rushing yards and big runs than I expected. Close games are usually decided on coaching decisions and this game the coaches were terrible. Where were all of the trick plays that the Ducks ran last week against ASU? Chip Kelly didn't take advantage of the Ducks speed by calling screen plays, reverses, etc. Masoli again would pull down and run without allowing enough time for a pass play to develop. Mike Bellotti should have put Roper in sooner to see what he could do and maybe even should have given Darron Thomas an opportunity. As with the Boise State game I blame this game on bad coaching, the Ducks should be 8-1 right now. My Grade for this game: F (The Ducks coaches gave this one away)

Jeremiah Masoli was named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Ducks 54-20 win over ASU.

Matt Evensen was also named Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this year.

The honors were the fourth Pac-10 Player of the Week awards for the Ducks this year.

Oregon vs Arizona State: Grades and Analysis

Good thing the game was not televised as the Ducks came out with what most people would consider an ugly uniform combination (personally I liked them). White lids, white jerseys and yellow pants. The look was similar to the old 90's uniforms except with white helmets instead of yellow. The Ducks might have had ugly uniforms, but other than three turnovers, the Ducks looked very good and played very well on both sides of the ball. LeGarrette Blount had another TD run worthy of a ESPN highlight. The run reminded me of the run Maurice Morris had against Colorado in the Fiesta Bowl. Blount was tackled but rolled onto a ASU player and rolled right off of him without touching his knee or body to the ground, Blount continue to roll over the ASU player onto his feet and spun and ran 19 yards to paydirt. Official review showed Blount never was down on the play. Jeff Maehl also had a spectacular catch when he was able to get his foot down inbounds when the rest of his body was out of bounds.

Grades:

Passing: It seems the Ducks were able to figure some things out with the passing game during the bye week. Most of the pass plays were short passes, but at least the players were able to hold onto the ball this time. Also, the play book that suits the spread offense was opened up a little more this game. A couple of revereses (double), misdirection, and screen plays (including the biggest pass play from scrimmage this year a 62 yard reception and run by the Ducks new best receiver Chris Harper)

Grade: B+
This was probably the best passing game the Ducks have had all season (Darron Thomas had over 200 passing yards against Boise State in one quarter, but the Ducks lost)
233 total passing yards, Masoli 17-26 147 yards 1TD 1INT, Roper 4-4 86 yards 1TD

Running: This is of course the Ducks strength, however this game the passing and rushing game was a little more balanced. The Ducks didn't have a single 100 yard rusher, but the Ducks had 6 30 yard rushers. Masoli was the leading rusher again this week with 85 yards. Not a single Duck player ran the ball 10 times, JJ had the most rushes with 9. Both Blount and JJ ran for 2 touchdowns each. And again the play book this week was opened up by allowing the speedy receivers to get involved in running the ball.

Grade: A
Five TD's on the ground, six runners totaling 300 yards (I didn't include Roper's 3 rushes for 4 yards or Darron Thomas's run to end the game)

Run Defense: The run defense did its part as it has done all season with exception of the Purdue and USC games. Of course ASU has the worst run offense in the Pac-10. The Ducks run D held 7 ASU runners to 107 yards on the ground which included Carpenter's 4 rushes for -19 yards. The leading ASU rusher had 10 carries for 56 yards (a good chunk of that was in junk time)

Grade: A
Three sacks, a forced fumble and recovery, pressure on the QB leading to two interceptions. The Ducks need to do the same next week against Cal.

Pass Defense: It seems as though the bye week allowed the secondary to get healthy and make some adjustments as The D-Boyz finally lived up to their expectations. The Ducks had two interceptions, including one in the endzone. Carpenter was held to under 150 yards passing and the Ducks didn't give up any big plays.

Grade: A
The Ducks only gave up only one long scoring drive. Two interceptions, under 150 yards passing by Carpenter, no big pass plays. 226 total passing yards and two TD's through the air, one of which was at the end of the game in junk time as well as 90 or so of those yards.

Overall Grade: A

The Ducks did a good job all around. The Ducks were only penalized twice for twenty yards, fifteen of those yards were by the back-ups late in the game. The only area the Ducks didn't do so well is with turnovers. The turnover margin was even with 3 turnovers each. One of which lead to a ASU TD. Evensen missed a short field goal but made up for it with two more field goals including a 52 yarder. There were a few bad snaps, twice the ball went over Masoli's head, but he was able to make something out of a bad situation both times, and on an extra point attempt there was a bad snap. The Ducks need to improve on not turning over the ball but otherwise need to do a lot of the same next week at Cal and I think the Ducks will win.

Recruiting Update

Recruiting news has not been good for the Ducks this week as the Ducks lost out on five players to other schools. Craig Loston, the number one rated Safety who decommitted from Clemson chose LSU over Oregon, Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. Although Loston was a long shot, it was nice to see such a highly rated player even consider Oregon, like Terrelle Pryor did last year. Pretty soon these types of players won't just consider Oregon, they will be choosing the Ducks on a regular basis...... watch out USC. Oregon was the only team on the west coast Loston was considering. Jeremiah Sirles, Offensive Tackle out of Colorado, who narrowed his list down to Nebraska and Oregon chose the Huskers over the Ducks. Jamal Atofau, Safety out of Washington chose the Washintgon State Cougars over Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona and Boise State. Brandon Sermons, Cornerback out of California chose UCLA over the Ducks, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and San Diego State. Defensive End Christian James out of Florida chose Colorado State over Oregon, Auburn, South Florida, and Iowa State. Sometimes I guess it pays to be a smaller school, as James stated "The big schools say, 'We offer, you better commit.' They don't really let you get to your comfort zone." Although the Ducks didn't get any good recruiting news this week, there are still a number of great recruits considering Oregon and a lot of time left to get some of these highly rated players.

Ducks Making Noise on the Recruitment Front

The Ducks are receiving a lot of attention from highly rated recruits from around the country, including a few from the East and South. According to Scouts, there are currently four players who have decommited from another team, three of which are on the ESPN 150 list and now have interest in the Ducks. The Ducks currently have interest from a total of five ESPN 150 athletes, including USC decommit and number #3 Wide Receiver Shaquelle Evans, Clemson decommit and number #1 rated Safety Craig Loston, and West Virginia decommit and #10 Quarterback Tajh Boyd. The Ducks are also receiving interest from #11 Wide Receiver Rolando Jefferson, #9 Cornerback Cliff Harris, #12 Defensive Tackle Edward Nuckols, #12 Cornerback Travis Hawkins, #18 Defensive End Nick Kasa, #17 Safety Alex Logan, #14 Defensive Tackle Deandre Coleman, and #20 Defensive Tackle Eric Smiley. Boyd and Hawkins are from Virginia and Maryland, Smiley is from Arkansas, Loston is from Texas, and Kasa and Logan are from Colorado. The success of last year, the facilities, the relationship with Nike and Phil Knight, the reputation of the fans and Autzen stadium, the media attention garnered with Terrelle Pryor considering Oregon, Chip Kelly's spread offense, and recent Duck athletes making it in the NFL are all great recruiting tools, leading to the Ducks being able to draw interest from players from the East, South and Texas to consider Oregon. Now the Ducks just need to get a good defensive coordinator a and they will be set to make consistent runs at the Pac-10 title and maybe even the NC.

Ducks in Four Way Tie for First Place in Pac-10

While the Ducks got a much needed week off to get healthy and make changes and adjustments to make a run during the second half of the season, Arizona was able to defeat California to put Oregon in a four way tie for first place in the Pac-10 with Oregon State, USC and Arizona at the midpoint of the season. Considering the injuries, the lack of a passing game and the problems defending the pass the Ducks are in a good position to make a good bowl game. Of course the most difficult part of the season is still to come, all of the Ducks remaining five games should be battles. Oregon State by virtue of their win over USC is the frontrunners right now, they have the easiest route to the Rose Bowl, they have already defeated USC and have Cal, ASU and the Ducks at home and they seem to get stronger as the season goes on, however there are still a lot of games to be played and anything can happen.

New Duck Commit Diante Jackson Upgraded to Four Stars!

Recent Duck commit WR Diante Jackson was upgraded to four stars from three stars by both rivals and scout. Jackson is ranked as the number forty-five wide receiver by Rivals.com

Jackson is a great looking player on the hoof and has some real skills and upside as a deep threat because of his size and deceptive speed and he can also create mismatch problems in the redzone. He is well built with good height and long arms. Shows good surge off the line and gets to top speed pretty quickly. Is a smooth runner with a nice stride. Climbs the ladder and gets on the DB's toes faster than people think. He shows quick hands, tucks the ball quickly and gets upfield immediately. At the next level he will probably be best suited in the intermediate passing game and on fade routes, but he has very good sideline awareness and body control to adjust to downfield balls that he has made himself a deep threat regardless of the fact that he does not have blazing speed. Shows quick burst and the ability to make sharp cuts as a route runner, but still must become more precise in this area. Size and hands give him an edge in contested match-ups and he knows how to elevate on jump balls and high point the ball. Overall, Jackson isn't a blazer, but he has good tools and size and is a competitive guy. Good prospect.

Three Star OT Everett Benyard is a Duck!

Everett Benyard is the latest recruit to commit to the Ducks. Benyard was a visitor last week for the UCLA game and chose the Ducks over Arizona, Washington, Washington State and San Diego State. UCLA, Utah, Arizona State and Notre Dame also recruited him. Benyard is a 6'7" 318 pound OT from Cathedral HS in California. He is the #47 rated OT with a rating of 77 by Scouts, Inc. The Offensive Tackle position is one of the areas the Ducks have a need to fill this recruiting season. Great pick up for the Ducks!

What Scouts, Inc. says about Benyard:
Benyard has the potential to be a good college offensive lineman. He is huge and long-armed, certainly bigger than most high school offensive tackles. Has excellent power and can knock a defender back with a flick of his hands. Shows flashes of greatness when he uses proper technique. His best block is the down block, when he routinely wipes out the line of scrimmage to the play side. Gets good movement on double-teams, but has trouble keeping his shoulders square due to his footwork. Shows effort getting downfield, but has trouble with his body control and doesn't always lock on to the defender. Holds his own in protection when he maintains a good base and uses his hands. Forces pass rushers to go a long way to get around him. Much of his power will be negated by a relative lack of quickness against quality college competition. Takes way too long an initial stride, which is his most glaring shortcoming. Must shorten his first step to create better leverage and be in position to block movement. Must drop some weight to at least develop competitive quickness and speed. Benyard already has the strength to be a college lineman, and with a lot of foot agility, technique and conditioning work he could develop into a force.

Recruiting News: UCLA Game Visitors Update

The Ducks had nine official visitors for the game against UCLA, as well as a number of unofficial visitors from the 2010 class. It was one of the largest groups of visiting recruits for the Ducks ever. In addition to the number of recruits at the UCLA game, the Ducks also got some good news regarding a few other players the Ducks have been looking at. Everything is shaping up to be a top 20 recruiting class this year. With the Ducks program starting to receive more national media attention, the partnership between Nike and the program, the cutting edge facilities, equipment, uniforms, etc. And of course the reputation of Autzen Stadium and the Duck fans and Chip Kelly's spread offense has given the Ducks the ability to recruit hi-caliber athletes from across the nation the Ducks had not been able to do successfully in the past. The Ducks still have a ways to go before they are able to recruit to the level of USC, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, LSU, etc. but they are getting there. Now only if the Ducks can strenghten their coaching staff by bringing in a new Defensive Coordinator, they could become serious contenders for the Pac-10 Championship!

Chris Harper Makes Switch to Wide Receiver

Chris Harper will transition into playing wide receiver full time, which sounds like a good thing considering he was the only one that could catch the ball against UCLA and his touchdown reception was the difference in the game. Maybe he will pressure J-Will and the other receivers to step-up.

Ducks vs Arizona State: Television Broadcast Update

The Pacific-10 Conference denied a request Tuesday by the University of Oregon to broadcast the Oct. 25 game between the Ducks and Arizona State, meaning the 7 p.m. game in Tempe, Ariz., will not be televised.

"When I first heard that the time was announced for 7 o'clock, I assumed that was for television," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said.

The Sun Devils already had fulfilled their contractual obligation to the local Fox network to show two games in Tempe; so their obligation was to their fans, who prefer 7 p.m. kickoffs because of the desert heat.

ABC/ESPN has exclusive rights for the first broadcast window, at 12:30 p.m., and on Monday, ABC selected the California-UCLA game (Cal is the only Pac-10 team undefeated in conference play, and Los Angeles is a big TV market).

Fox has exclusivity for the 3:30 and 7 p.m. windows, but on Oct. 25, the middle window is unprotected because FSN is not showing a game at that time.

"I don't know all the politics and all the deals about how and why teams are chosen to be on TV," Bellotti said. "I'm frustrated that we're going to play a 7 p.m. kickoff on the road and it's not televised."

The Pac-10 is in the second year of a 5-year agreement with ABC/ESPN, Fox Sports Net and Versus. Because of contractual agreements OSN is not able to bradcast the game live, but is able to show a replay of the game later.

Recruiting News: 2010 RB/LB Prospect Soma Vainuku

Eureka High football standout Soma Vainuku made an unofficial recruiting trip to the University of Oregon last weekend. Vainuku is a cousin to USC's Rey Maualuga and is a top 2010 recruiting prospect at the RB/LB position.

The 6-foot tall, 255-pound running back was invited to attend the Ducks’ home game against UCLA on Saturday.

“I met with the head coach, the coach who recruited me and the defensive coach, but on the sideline during the game, I was not allowed to speak with any alumni or boosters,” Vainuku said.

“SC and Oregon were my two top choices before,” he

said. “Oregon is definitely the richest college out there for sports, I’d say. They focus on sports the most. But in the end, it’s up to me and my parents to decide what’s the best fit for me.”
